Four memorial stones (Stolpersteine) will be set for the renowned Czech-Austrian archaeologist and art dealer Ludwig Pollak, his wife Julia and his two adult sons Wolfgang and Susanna on 20 January 2022 at 9:30 CET on the sidewalk in front of Palazzo Odescalchi, Pollak’s last address (Piazza Santi Apostoli 81). This ceremony forms part of the 13th edition of the initiative „Memorie d’inciampo a Roma“.
Pollak (born on 14 Sept. 1868 in Prague) lived in Rome for almost fifty years and is known above all for his discovery of the original arm of the „Laocoön“ (Vatican Museums) and for the identification of the famous „Athena Stroganoff“ (Liebieghaus in Frankfurt). The Pollak family was among the more than one thousand Roman Jews who were arrested on „Sabato nero“, 16 October 1943, and deported two days later to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where almost all were immediately sent to the gas chamber.

Quattro pietre d’inciampo (Stolpersteine) per il rinomato archeologo e mercante d’arte ceco-austriaco Ludwig Pollak, sua moglie Julia e i suoi due figli adulti Wolfgang e Susanna saranno deposte il 20 gennaio 2022 alle ore 9.30 sul marciapiede davanti a Palazzo Odescalchi, ultima dimora dei Pollak, in Piazza Santi Apostoli 81 nell’ambito della 13a edizione dell’iniziativa “Memorie d’inciampo a Roma“.
Pollak (nato il 14 settembre 1868 a Praga) ha vissuto a Roma per quasi 50 anni ed è noto ai posteri soprattutto per la sua scoperta del braccio originale del Laocoonte, così come per l’identificazione della famosa Atena Stroganoff, ora nel museo Liebieghaus di Francoforte. La famiglia Pollak fu tra gli oltre 1.000 ebrei romani arrestati il Sabato nero, 16 ottobre 1943, e trasportati due giorni dopo ad Auschwitz-Birkenau, dove quasi tutti furono immediatamente mandati al gas.

Vier Stolpersteinen für den namhaften tschechisch-österreichischen Archäologen und Kunsthändler Ludwig Pollak, seine Frau Julia und seine beiden erwachsenen Kinder Wolfgang und Susanna im Rahmen der 13. Auflage der Initiative “Memorie d’inciampo a Roma” werden am 20. Januar 2022 um 9.30 Uhr auf dem Bürgersteig vor dem Palazzo Odescalchi, der letzten Wohnstätte der Pollaks, in Piazza Santi Apostoli 81, verlegt.
Pollak (* 14. September 1868 in Prag) lebte fast 50 Jahre in Rom und ist der Nachwelt vor allem wegen seiner Entdeckung des originalen Arms des Laokoon bekannt, wie auch durch die Identifizierung der berühmten Athena Stroganoff, jetzt im Frankfurter Liebieghaus. Die Familie Pollak gehörte zu den über 1.000 römischen Juden, die am Sabato nero, dem 16. Oktober 1943, verhaftet und zwei Tage später nach Auschwitz-Birkenau transportiert wurden, wo fast alle von ihnen sofort ins Gas geschickt wurden.
