Provenance is the history of ownership of a work of art or other cultural object. Knowing the provenance of a cultural object has become ever more essential for determining its suitability for acquisition or, conversely, restitution based on both legal and ethical considerations. This program will introduce students to the methods of conducting provenance research and assessing the status of cultural objects in light of legal and ethical constraints. Topics will include Nazi-era looting, the acquisition and restitution of archaeological material, issues in colonial-era provenance, and cultural heritage during armed conflict.
The certificate program consists of two courses. The first, taught by Dr. Victoria Reed, will focus on methodologies and best practices in provenance research in a museum context. The second course, taught concurrently by Dr. Patty Gerstenblith, will focus on the legal and ethical issues relevant to the status of a cultural object based on provenance research concerning the object.
In addition, two classes will be offered by Professor Gabrielle Goodwin on the Friday and Saturday before the certificate program to provide a legal background for non-lawyers who wish to take the program. These two classes are optional and open to all program participants.
