Abstract: The WPI Sales Catalogues Database features over 23,000 digitized sales catalogues from Europe and America, dating from the 17th century to 1945. Sales catalogues are essential resources for studying the history of collecting, art market dynamics, and establishing the provenance of works of art.
Reflecting the collecting priorities and research activities of the former Wildenstein Institute, the WPI Sales Catalogues Database is a valuable resource for the study of public sales transactions and art market trends up until the mid-twentieth century. This presentation will offer an in-depth exploration of this rich research tool and its diverse applications.
The Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc. is a non-profit, private foundation established in 2016 and based in New York City. Working in collaboration with the Fonds WPI, our partner institution in Paris, we produce digitized catalogue raisonné projects, archival material, and related cultural programming, all accessible to the public online for free. Our institute aims to demonstrate the critical importance and relevance of archival research and its impact on cultural heritage, and to galvanize new avenues of scholarly exploration that pertain to our digital holdings.
Samantha Rowe is a Digital Archivist and Research Associate at the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc. (WPI).
