The Art Market Dictionary (AMD – artmarketdictionary.com) is the first encompassing scholarly guide to art galleries, auction houses, art fairs, and agents from multiple national and historical contexts. Several highly distinguished partner institutions and more than three hundred specialized authors have joined us to establish a comprehensive map of the art trade.
The presentation of the AMD – by its Editor-in-Chief, Editor, and Section Editor for the Netherlands – will be followed by an open discussion of the opportunities and challenges of this project. Colleagues interested in art market history are particularly welcome and may wish to collaborate in the mapping of a subject which is still uncharted in many areas.
The presentation will be followed by a lecture by Naomi Oosterman discussing aspects of her recently completed dissertation that focuses on uncovering the dynamics and logics of art theft in the European Union. This mixed methods study provides both a systematic analysis of Interpol’s Stolen Works of Art Database as well as a qualitative research design and particularly discusses the management of art theft risks in Italy and the Netherlands. The lecture will take a closer look at how crime and criminality disrupt the art market.
