ANN: Summer School “Art and Cultural Heritage: Law Policy and Practice”

The Summer School “Art and Cultural Heritage: Law Policy and Practice” offers a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of international cultural heritage law and its role in protecting art and cultural property in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Designed for a broad and interdisciplinary audience—including students, early-career researchers, legal professionals, cultural heritage practitioners, and art market actors—the programme combines solid legal foundations with practical insights and forward-looking perspectives.

Participants will explore key topics such as the regulation of the international art market, the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property, and the protection of cultural heritage in situations of armed conflict. The faculty will examine the main international legal instruments adopted by UNESCO and other international organizations—among them the 1954 Hague Convention, the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, and the 2017 Council of Europe Convention—together with their implementation at the national level.

The course also addresses the interaction between cultural heritage law and other legal fields, notably European Union law, intellectual property law, and human rights law, as well as issues of dispute settlement. Particular attention is devoted to emerging challenges, including the impact of new technologies and artificial intelligence on the art market and the protection of cultural heritage.

The Summer School will take place at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, from 29 June to 3 July, in person
