The art world has long relied on the expertise of dealer-scholars. Until fairly recently, galleries were small operations whose long-term relationships with artists and collectors facilitated in-depth connoisseurship. With the rise of global mega-galleries, who will sort out the vexing problems of authenticity and provenance that were once the domain of dealer-scholars?
Bill Charron is a litigator who co-chairs the Art Law Group at Pryor Cashman. He is an advisor to the Authentication in Art Foundation and a founder of the Court of Arbitration for Art in The Hague.
Elizabeth Gorayeb is the Executive Director of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, a foundation dedicated to the compilation of digital catalogues raisonnés and archives (wpi.art).
Jane Kallir is the Director of the Galerie St. Etienne and the author of the comprehensive catalogue raisonné Egon Schiele: The Complete Works (1990; expanded edition 1998; digital edition 2018, www.egonschieleonline.org).
David Nash is a Director of Mitchell-Innes & Nash, and the author, together with Walter Feilchenfeldt and Jayne Warman, of the comprehensive Cézanne catalogue raisonné (www.cezannecatalogue.com).
