About the book:
Art galleries, as intermediaries between creators and their public, are at the core of this book. Five
specialists – historians, art historians and economists – draw on the most recent research to offer an
unprecedented overview of their history in France, from the 19th century to the present day.
This book sketches an original history of an art market reacting to societal changes and artistic
revolutions: it highlights the complex relationships that exist between dealers, artists and collectors of
modern and contemporary art, as well as the profound transformations of the art dealer’s profession,
from the curiosity sellers of the past, to today’s gallery owners.
