About the book:

Art auctions are spectacular theatres of the contemporary artworld. From glittering black-tie events to the anonymity of the digital realm, auctions stage the creation of value and can make or break artists’ careers. This book explores the multifaceted role of auctions in international and local art markets, highlighting dramatic transformations and debating why this sales format still plays such a powerful role in contemporary artworlds. The book examines auction houses’ relentless drive to innovate, the entry of new market players, and the ever-increasing demand for contemporary art on the part of collectors. In so doing, it offers a fresh view of online auctions, new strategies for direct sales to the public, regional expansion, and problems of regulation. By exploring the changing ambitions and activities of auction houses, the book sheds new light on the power structures and social dynamics of global art commerce.
