About the book:
In the 1960s and 1970s, the art world underwent a profound transformation: the avant-garde—born in the nineteenth century out of a break with official art—began to enjoy unprecedented recognition and support from public institutions.
Such an alliance was far from self-evident: avant-garde artists challenged museum traditions; their experiments, often difficult to comprehend, did not easily align with efforts to democratize the arts; and the transgressive nature of their works made them ill-suited for official recognition. Public support for unconventional art thus gave rise to enduring tensions between artistic freedom and the audience’s expectations. How can we explain the integration of artistic subversion into the heart of state institutions?
From New York’s alternative spaces to the Centre Pompidou, from the Venice Biennale to the documenta in Kassel, this book traces the history of the turbulent relationships between states, museums, and the avant-garde from 1945 to 1980, across three countries at the heart of the international art world: France, Germany, and the United States. A new perspective on the emergence of contemporary art.
