CFP: Women Supporting Women for SECAC due April 1

I invite submissions to the session “Women Supporting Women”

“This panel seeks to highlight what women from any culture or time period have done to further the careers of women artists during their lifetimes. Many art historical writings and exhibitions have prioritized prominent women who have supported male artists, but how have women used their power and influence to support women artists? The Museum of Modern Art in New York recently presented an exhibition, “Lillie P. Bliss and the Birth of the Modern,” honoring the museum’s trailblazing co-founder, who also supported the landmark 1913 Armory Show. Both the institution and exhibition focused on male artists. Other examples include Claribel and Etta Cone, whose modern art collection with works by Henri Matisse and others enhanced the Baltimore Museum of Art. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, herself an artist and founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, supported prominent male artists, such as George Bellows and Reginald Marsh but also lesser-known women including Peggy Bacon and Mabel Dwight. Gertrude Stein and her brothers are best known for their support of Matisse and Picasso but also purchased work by Marie Laurencin.
