From production to access, the visual arts field has changed substantially in the last decades, specially considering the performances of agents and institutions, which together act in the creation of legitimating structures and in the definition of what art is or not. However, the logic of production, circulation, legitimation and consumption
is also associated with spheres other than those specific to the artistic context, highlighting the connections inherent in the development of the art system.
In this sense, the 1st Symposium on Art Systemic Relations ART BEYOND ART proposes to debate the transformations in the mode(s) of operation through which the production of contemporary visual arts has been going through.
An essentially transdisciplinary event that aims to open the dialogue between researchers of Arts, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Literature, Technology, Sciences and other areas interested in thinking about the theme. The Symposium seeks to bringing together researchers who are interested in the wide range of possible relationships that permeate artistic making, its legitimation, visibility, circulation and access.
We propose discussions that envisage cross-linking between local and global as an inherent feature in the contemporary art world. With this, we hope to question the notion of autonomy of art in the present days, connecting the current power to an increasingly heteronomous artistic field; to analyze the contemporary legitimization spheres and its mechanisms; as well as the overlapping of professional roles and the paradox of the high specialization of the artistic field versus the constant need to add new skills to the professional profile. All these questions should take in account the ethical and aesthetical reverberations of the current configurations in the art system and in the artistic production.
For this, the event is organized in the following thematic nuclei:
1. Crossroads of fields in artistic processes: this section entails art that evades pre-established principles, seeks new forms of reflection and materialization, and expands the understanding of art itself, makes use of new technological-digital means and procedures that transform the relations of the artistic work, as well as exert renovation forces to old practices;
2. The art system in the market economy: this section seeks transformations within the art system, focusing the debate on the processes of institutionalization, financialization and entrepreneurship through which artistic production and cultural institutions have been conducted amidst the protagonism of market economy;
3. Being local, being global – processes in transit: this section discusses the major transformations of the contemporary world: displacement of people, information and goods, and build bridges of dialogue between local and global, their contradictions and connections, or how to think center-periphery relations today, such as art fairs, biennials and major exhibitions.
ART BEYOND ART is an initiative of the Brazilian Research Group Territoriality and Subjectivity, enabled by the governmental development agencies CAPES and CNPq; the Graduate Program in Visual Arts of the Institute of Arts oat UFRGS and the Goethe Institut.
This event is part of the activities of the TIAMSA Subcommittee Art Market and Collecting in the European Southern Countries and Brazil and counts with the partnership of Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Galeria Mamute.
