Before auction catalogues became common in the 1730s, the workings of the art market in Paris are difficult to reconstruct. A series of transactions recorded in previously unexplored documents reveals new information about the activities of a circle of dealers who supplied paintings to leading collectors, including the duc d’Orléans and Pierre Crozat.
