Today, self-organized, independent art spaces are a self-evident part of urban art scenes in particular. However, it is by no means self-explanatory that they are recognized by cultural policy, art criticism, and historiography. This has to do with the diversity of the initiatives as well as with the scarcely present discussion of their activities, merits and their function within the artistic landscape. Already the multitude of designations testify to different characteristics with partly conflicting significance: Many operators, for example, move professionally in the institutional context as well as in the independent scene. Galleries, foundations, museums, project and artist-based spaces are aimed at established artists and longer-term partnerships with sponsoring institutions. Cultural policy conditions also vary widely in different cities and regions. Despite the fact that their presence in the art world has lasted for several decades, the self-organized initiatives continue to move on unsecured ground. The event Recognition now! Just what for? Self-organization in and with art aims to discuss this paradoxical situation with actors from the artistic self-organization and guests and to ask for perspectives.

Die Veranstaltung wird organisiert durch das Kompetenzzentrum Kunst, Design & Öffentlichkeit, Hochschule Luzern – Design & Kunst und durchgeführt im Rahmen des SNF-Forschungsprojekts ‘Off OffOff Of? Schweizer Kulturpolitik und Selbstorganisation in der Kunst seit 1980’.

WORKSHOP
Im eintägigen Workshop (9.30 – 17.00) präsentiert die Forschungsgruppe Materialien aus den bisherigen, im Rahmen vom Forschungsprojekt erfolgten Recherchen. Diese werden im Turnus von Kleingruppen angeschaut und diskutiert. Der Workshop richtet sich an alle aktuellen und ehemaligen BetreiberInnen von selbstorganisierten Kunsträumen und Initaitven.
