Summer Academy Curating and Writing About Art

Curatorial theory and practice will be taught this summer by renowned curators: Diana Campbell Betancourt and Ruth Noack. Art critic Martin Herbert will instruct participants on writing about art. And Sabrina Steinek and Sabine B. Vogel will teach a blogging course.

“Thinking Beyond the Event – Considering Large-scale Exhibition Platforms in the 21st Century”
9–18 August 2018
American curator Diana Campbell Betancourt scrutinises the format of the large-scale exhibition in today’s world. Based in Manila and Dhaka, she has been working throughout South Asia since 2010. Artistic director of the Samdani Art Foundation in Dhaka and chief curator of the Dhaka Art Summit, she is involved in further projects and institutions in the Philippines and India, and thus one of the most active protagonists and experts in the South Asian art scene.

“Thinking with Works of Art”

The globalised art world has replaced all the hard questions with smart curatorial practices that claim to deal with the intricacies of power relations, while shifting goods from one continent to another. Documenta 12 curator Ruth Noack considers that it is time to ask what could oppose this transnational trade of objects, people and networks. The workshop will tackle the question of the potential of form to resist. The aim of the course is not to realise actual exhibitions, but to learn from the process of making how we might understand curatorial engagement with works of art as a process of thinking through an issue.

MARTIN HERBERT
“Writing about Contemporary Art”

There are many reasons for writing about contemporary art – whether you’re writing criticism in its various forms, producing an explanatory text for a museum, or simply want to put the personal experience of visiting a gallery into language that lives up to it. The course directed by British critic and writer Martin Herbert is designed to be useful to anyone who seeking to develop or improve their writing in this field. Herbert’s texts on contemporary art have been published for over 20 years in journals including Artforum, frieze and Parkett. He has also written several books and is associate editor of ArtReview.
In his course, a number of formats will be explored, including the exhibition review, the longer essay and the institutional text, as well as finding a creative and clear response to the subjective process of looking at contemporary art.

“Art in the Blog”

Sabrina Steinek and Sabine B. Vogel, art historians, art critics and bloggers, teach how to write about art in our digital age. Today, blogs are used as journals, enabling quick and independent reporting, and thus ideal for the visual arts. But how to begin? How to write about art in a style suitable for a blog? Not only the creation and improvement of your own blog, will be discussed, but also its publication in social media and search-engine optimisation.
