Transnational Art Practices and Online Networks in the 21st Century

This is a three-year, EU/UK only funded, full-time PhD scholarship. Collaborating partners: Gasworks, CSNI (The Centre for the Study of the Networked Image) and RCA (Royal College of Art).

The selected candidate will undertake a three-year research project, with either a practice-based or discursive-based methodology, involving situated practice at Gasworks, leading to the submission of a thesis/portfolio submission in 2021.

Project Description

This doctoral research post will consider how artists and curators in art residency programmes are engaging with and being shaped by 21st century global conditions of mobility and communication, by asking how artistic and curatorial practices are interacting with new online networked practices to create transnational networks of global association and diverse collectivities. Centrally the research is keen to explore the potential of new relationships opened up by online art and curatorial practices as well as the deployment of online communication in International partnerships.

The research will bring to light the ways in which networks create new forms of transnational cultural value through a detailed examination of the innovative working relationships between international artists, curators, art organisations working within embedded urban geographies and online. The aim of the research is to support Gasworks achieve a greater understanding of its present practices and to inform Gasworks present trajectory and future strategies.

The objectives of the research are:

  • To critically evaluate Gasworks’ Triangle international art network
  • To work with artists, theorists, curators and technologists on modelling open and cooperative networks for contemporary transnational art
  • To understand the relationship between transnational art practices and contemporary urban culture

Potential questions include:

  • How might online curating relate to Gasworks’ commissioning processes and how could online networks bring new practices to light?
  • What can be learned from Gasworks’ international network of arts organisations as a contribution to the public arts field and how might it impact upon wider public arts policy and practice?
  • What is the significance of London for the growth of contemporary transnational art practices?
  • How is Gasworks’ international art programme relevant to the everyday experience of the city?

Looking at Art-Language: Artists’ Magazines 1969-1985

Despite Art & Language’s prominence and reputation, key aspects of their output and legacy remain overshadowed by dominant histories and narratives of conceptual art practice. The importance of the collective’s contribution to the field of artists’ writings and publications, for example, should not be under-estimated, as recent exhibitions focusing on conceptual art in Britain have shown.

This one-day symposium, to be held at the University of York on Thursday 12th October 2017, will explore in particular the often under-considered journal Art-Language, published between 1969 and 1985 within the wider context of artists’ magazines and their production, distribution and consumption during this period. The periodical was originally conceived as a discursive platform for the group’s text-based work, circumventing the space of the gallery and questioning the status of the art object as static, museum-bound artefact. Yet Art-Language has been frequently overlooked or misunderstood, being read instead through its exhibition history, and the critical discourses which surround it. These often re-situate the journal in precisely the object-based frameworks of display and consumption that the collective sought to question and challenge.

Papers will seek to position Art-Language within the burgeoning field of the study of artists’ publications and their histories, and with particular interest in how magazines and journals come to be framed subsequent to their original production.

Journal aims and scope
The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art (ANZJA) is published by the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand (AAANZ). AAANZ is Australia’s professional body for art and design historians, arts writers, artists, students of art history and theory, and museum professionals. The journal is Australasia’s principal refereed art history journal. ANZJA is dedicated to the study of art history and its various emanations including art practice, theory and exhibition.

The editors seek research papers that engage with critical debates and frameworks across art-historical and theoretical enquiry within local and global contexts, plus review essays evaluating publications and exhibitions. Articles must be between 5,000 and 7,000 words (including endnotes) and should be suitable for a scholarly peer-reviewed journal.
