TIAMSA Member News: CAA 2022 Panel Discussion “Frenemies? – Provenance and Art Market Studies” (Online, 17 February 2022, 20:00-21:00 CET)

As it has done in past years, The International Art Market Studies Association (TIAMSA) will hold a panel discussion during CAA’s annual meeting in February. This year’s topic is “Frenemies? – Provenance and Art Market Studies.” The panel will be chaired by Max Koss (Provenance Studies Lab, Leuphana University).

Against the backdrop of the dual and connected challenges of an increasing amount of art market information becoming available and the digitalization of research and knowledge production, this panel brings together three experts in provenance and art market research to discuss aspects of these challenges. What is the nature of the relationship between provenance and art market studies? How has it developed and what is its future going to look like? Where do these fields align and what are the factors that make the relationship a potentially fraught one? The panelists will give short presentations, followed by a roundtable discussion and short Q & A.

The panelists are:

Elizabeth Gorayeb, Executive Director, Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc.

Prof. Lynn Rother, Lichtenberg-Professor for Provenance Studies, Leuphana University

Sandra van Ginhoven, Head, Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance at Getty Research Institute

Eugène Fichel, À l’hôtel Drouot, 1877, oil on canvas, private collection, Photo: Lukas Fuchsgruber.
