Christie’s Education will host its third academic conference in Hong Kong from 26-27 November 2020 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The conference will run in parallel with Christie’s Hong Kong Autumn Auctions. This conference is part of the International Art & the Market Series, which launched in 2016 in London with Creating Markets, Collecting Art, followed in 2018 in New York by Celebrating Female Agency in the Arts
Titled, The Chinese Art Market, the conference will explore the global impact of the Chinese art ecosystem from both historical and current perspectives.
One of the sessions will focus on Asian artists who made Paris their home during the 20th century. As it has been well-documented, from the end of the nineteenth century to the late 1900s, Paris remained a magnet for artists coming from all over the world. From practical training, to a rich historical and cultural patrimony, and a culture with a reputation of permissiveness, Paris offered also plenty of opportunities to show your work and a dynamic network of dealers in an artist-friendly art ecosystem.
In addition to proposals which address the careers of long-time Paris residents such as Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong, Sanyu, Zao Wou Ki, and Chun Teh Chun to more contemporary artists like Chen Zhen, Wang Keping, Huang Yong Ping Li Shuang, or Yan Peiming, we seek papers which shed light on the networks that supported and promoted these Asian artists; the associations such as the Société des Artistes Chinois and the Société Chinoise des Art Décoratifs, the art dealers such as Pierre Loeb who supported the careers of Zao Wou Ki, and their collectors. Papers dealing with how the official art institutions of these countries contextualized this very specific artistic production are also welcome.
