Welcome Back

Welcome back, TIAMSA Members,

For many of us in the Western Hemisphere, September is the end of the summer and back to school time. We hope you were able to enjoy some down time.

As you know, 2026 marks TIAMSA’s 10th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, we hope you will join us in New York for our annual conference, October 22–24. Natasha Degen and Mary Davis have organized two days of engaging presentations on the theme Art as Luxury, Luxury as Art: Markets and the Making of Value. The third day will be devoted to the AGM, a conference debrief, updates from members of the Board, continued conversation, and a few visits. We are grateful to Natasha, Mary, and our host, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, for helping us mark this important anniversary. Please mark your calendar; the full program will be announced shortly.

We encourage you to stay for the full conference, from the opening day devoted to emerging scholars through the final day of more informal discussion and exchange.

As TIAMSA looks to a new decade, we are grateful for the strong legacy passed on by our founding members and are beginning two important projects. The first is technical: we plan to redesign our website to improve its functionality and increase TIAMSA’s visibility. The second is a tribute to the field of art market studies and to its remarkable development over the past decade. In 2027, Routledge will publish our Companion to Arts Markets Research, an edited volume conceived in close connection with the association’s intellectual mission and scholarly network. This milestone responds to a pressing need within the field: the lack of a comprehensive methodological handbook for researchers working on the art market. As you know, the art market is, by nature, a transdisciplinary field of inquiry, studied across art history, sociology, economics, economic history, history, anthropology, law, cultural management, management studies, digital humanities, provenance research, and other areas of the humanities and social sciences. This volume seeks to address the fragmentation that can result from that disciplinary plurality.

This week, we resume our activities. Our weekly postings will continue, and we invite you to send Masoom any calls for papers or updates relevant to the TIAMSA community. The Live Book Discussion series will recommence on September 24 with a conversation between Yoram Eshkol-Rokash and Nizan Shaked about Eshkol-Rokash’s new book on private museums of contemporary art. We will welcome a new cohort of Emerging Scholars in February 2027, and we also hope to see you at the College Art Association in New York in February for our affiliated society session, chaired by Giada Pellicari and Stefania Portinari, titled “The Dawn of Euphoria: Art Market Transformation in the 70s and the 80s,” as well as for our business meeting.

TIAMSA is your association, and we welcome your ideas. Please let us know what interests you, which books you would like to see discussed in the Live Book Discussion series, and how else we can support the field.

With our warmest wishes

Anne-Sophie and Véronique
