Book Abstract:
Art critics of the 19th century called the Hôtel Drouot the “stock exchange of art” or a “casino”. This was the place where Parisian auctioneers held their auctions from 1852 onwards, thus significantly changing the French art market. Departing from the economic and legal peculiarities of the auction system in France and their relation with French art history, the book “Das Spektakel der Auktion” illustrates the importance of the Hôtel Drouot for artists and art dealers, as well as its reception in art criticism. Archival sources, historical literature and numerous reproductions shed light on a key period in the development of the French art market.

Author’s CV:
Lukas Fuchsgruber (Berlin) submitted his doctoral thesis on the founding of the Hôtel Drouot (supervisor Prof. Bénédicte Savoy) in 2018. He subsequently worked on an early 20th century museum photo archive of forgeries. He is now a postdoctoral researcher in “Museums and Society, Mapping the Social”, a collaborative project of museums and universities in Berlin, working on a case study of the image worlds created in museum digitization.
