The Swiss Institute for Art Research (sik-isea.ch) and the Swiss Association for Provenance Research (provenienzforschung.ch) are jointly hosting this conference, which intends to provide a forum for exchange for those involved in provenance research.

Reconstructing the history of artworks has evolved recently from an auxiliary science serving museums, auction houses and basic art history research to become a discipline in its own right: provenance research. The catalyst was the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets in December 1998. If the sole focus there was art stolen by the Nazis, provenance research has since shifted its sights to colonial expropriation and the looting of cultural heritage. SIK-ISEA is organising a conference together with the Swiss Association for Provenance Research to stimulate exchange between the various stakeholders in this field

Das Schweiz. Institut für Kunstwissenschaft (sik-isea.ch) veranstaltet gemeinsam mit dem Schweizerischen Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung (provenienzforschung.ch) eine Tagung, die verschiedene Akteurinnen und Akteure aus dem Gebiet der Herkunftserschliessung von Kunstwerken und Kulturgütern zum Austausch anregen will. Die Rekonstruktion der Geschichte von Kunstwerken hat sich jüngst von einer Hilfswissenschaft in Museen, im Auktionswesen oder in der kunsthistorischen Grundlagenforschung zur eigenständigen Disziplin der Provenienzforschung ausgebildet. Katalysator dafür war die Konferenz über Vermögenswerte aus der Zeit des Holocaust vom Dezember 1998 in Washington, D. C. Ging es da noch ausschliesslich um den Kunstraub der Nationalsozialisten, so hat sich der Fokus der Provenienzforschung seither auf die Enteignung von Kulturgut im Kolonialismus und auf Beutekunst erweitert.
