The Musée Fabre of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, created in 1828 by the painter François-Xavier Fabre and entirely renovated in 2007, is one of the region’s most emblematic heritage sites and one of the most important museums in Europe.
The museum has one of the finest public collections in France, a collection built up in large part through the donations of collectors and artists: François-Xavier Fabre, Antoine Valedau, Alfred Bruyas, Jules Bonnet-Mel, Alexandre Cabanel, the family of Frédéric Bazille, and more recently Pierre Soulages.
Since 2017, the Musée Fabre has held a “François Daulte” collection, consisting of the archive of the art historian, author of the first catalog raisonné of Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870). In addition to this collection, there is an exceptional collection of 76 autograph letters from Frédéric Bazille, 8 letters from his family and 30 letters from his artist friends: Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Edmond Maître in particular.
In order to enhance the value of this collection and more broadly the research of François Daulte, it was decided to establish an annual “François Daulte” grant of €10,000.
Thus, the “François Daulte” research grant will support research in history and art history in line with the fields of study of François Daulte, particularly on the following themes :
– The life and work of Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley and Auguste Renoir
– The beginnings of Impressionism
– Impressionism and the graphic arts
– Exhibiting and collecting Impressionism
– The history of art criticism during the second half of the 19th century
– The cultural and artistic life in Montpellier during the second half of the 19th century

Eligibility
The “François Daulte Grant” fellowship will be open to post-doctoral students in history and art history.
It will be open to French and English speaking candidates.
Expected
The endowment of the ” François Daulte” grant will depend on the following selection criteria
– Relevance and novelty of the proposed research
– Method of the proposed research
– Identification of the fonds
– Valorization and studies of the Daulte archives and other collections of the Musée Fabre
– Terms of use of the grant
The grant must result in a publication related to the research project, digital or paper, during the two years following the allocation of the grant.
Terms and conditions of application
To be eligible for the award, the candidate must hold a PhD at the time of submission of the application.
Each candidate will have to write an application file for the ” François Daulte ” grant with :
– A four-page presentation in French or English (excluding bibliographies and images) of the project, as well as the planned work schedule and a provisional budget
– A CV, including the list of publications, works, conferences, colloquia, and teaching
– A letter of intent
– The PhD report
– A possible letter of recommendation from a scientific personality supporting the application
The rules duly completed, dated and signed : rules to be downloaded in attachment.
All documents must be sent to the Fabre Museum in digital form with the mention “François Daulte”.

The Jury
The winner will be chosen by a jury composed of researchers and professionals from the art world. It is composed of seven members:

– Bertrand Tillier, Professor of Contemporary History, Director of the Editions de la Sorbonne Co-director of the Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle (UR 3550), Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne / Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle
The jury’s decision is final and without appeal. The jury reserves the right not to award a prize in case of insufficient quality of the applications.
